In Job 38, God answers Job out of the whirlwind and begins asking him a series of questions about the creation of the world.
One of those questions includes a mysterious phrase:
“while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?”
— Job 38:7 (NIV)
The verse describes the moment when the earth was formed. God asks Job where he was when the foundations of the world were laid.
The point of the passage is clear. Job was not present at creation.
Yet someone was.
The verse suggests that witnesses were present when God created the earth, and they responded with joy.
A common interpretation
Many readers wonder who the “morning stars” are.
Most interpreters understand the phrase to refer to angelic beings.
The NIV translates the second line as “all the angels shouted for joy.” Other translations preserve a more literal expression. The King James Version reads:
“When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.”
— Job 38:7 (KJV)
In the Old Testament, the phrase “sons of God” often refers to heavenly beings who belong to God’s court. Earlier in the book of Job, the same phrase appears when these beings present themselves before God (see Job 1:6, NIV).
Because the two expressions appear side by side, many readers understand them as poetic parallels describing the same group:
- morning stars
- sons of God
Both referring to heavenly beings who witnessed creation.
A moment of joy at creation
What stands out most in the verse is not only who these beings are, but what they are doing.
They are singing.
Creation is not portrayed as a silent event. It is described as a moment of celebration.
As God lays the foundations of the earth, the heavenly host responds with joy.
The verse offers a brief glimpse into a reality that existed before humanity. Long before people walked the earth, the heavens were already filled with beings who belonged to God.
And when the foundations of the world were laid, they sang.
This naturally raises another question often connected to this passage. Was Lucifer a morning star?
